What you are seeing is very true. After the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965), the Catholic Church liberalized itself quite a bit, and probably more important, gave individual Catholic clergy and laity pretext for even more liberalism among themselves. What once was an opportunity to serve God in pursuit of greater spiritual perfection has become more like being a glorified social worker. Many Catholic traditionalists, myself included, have resisted the innovations and even formed our parallel institutions (churches, schools, convents, etc.) which you will generally not hear about from the ‘mainline’ church which falsely paints us as schismatic or ‘splinter groups’. In traditionalist circles there is no shortage of priests and nuns, motivated by the same standards as existed prior to Vatican II. We are confident that the ‘new church’ will decline in importance and relevance for the coming generations, and Catholicism will eventually return to its roots. A good source of information is found at http://www.traditio.com.
