Do young women join convents and become nuns anymore? I’ve only ever seen elderly nuns out and about.
What you are seeing is very true. After the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965), the Catholic Church liberalized itself quite a bit, and probably more important, gave individual Catholic clergy and laity pretext for even more liberalism among themselves. What once was an opportunity to serve God in pursuit of greater spiritual perfection has become more like being a glorified social worker. Many Catholic traditionalists, myself included, have resisted the innovations and even formed our parallel institutions (churches, schools, convents, etc.) which you will generally not hear about from the ‘mainline’ church which falsely paints us as schismatic or ‘splinter groups’. In traditionalist circles there is no shortage of priests and nuns, motivated by the same standards as existed prior to Vatican II. We are confident that the ‘new church’ will decline in importance and relevance for the coming generations, and Catholicism will eventually return to its roots. A good source of information is found at http://www.traditio.com.
I’m 25, and for as long as I can remember I wanted to join a convent. Last week I started researching different ones to see which is right for me. I’m not a religious person – I’ve been an atheist for a long time now – but it’s something I have always wanted to do. But you are right: So far I too have seen only older women, which is something I have been a little worried about.
Are you serious! You want to join a convent but you are an athiest. You have to be joking. If you aren’t joking then you really need to think twice before making a fool of yourself. You can’t even join the Brownies if you’re an atheist – how do you excpect to become a nun? If you’re lacking female company then join a basketball team!!!
Why would you join a convent if you’re not religious?
Remember that not all nuns wear the traditional ‘penguin’ uniform. Older nuns are more likely to wear a habit and so would stand out more. Maybe you’ve walked right past younger nuns without knowing.
