I am a young black woman and have noticed this trend at school. There is a dress code prohibiting short shorts and skirts and low cut blouses. The Black and white girls dress in similar styles and the Black girls are usually the ones sent home for inapproproate dress. My friends always joke that the very people who fill out their clothes are the very ones sent home for wearing them, but I have also noticed another trend. Extremely thin and light black women aren’t sent home for their ‘oh so short shorts.’ I think Black America’s standard for beauty is different and when the curvier black beauties where the same clothes it looks different to our white principal. He sees it as unattractive and inappropriate bcause he has been programmed to see things with a different standard.
