PriyaMemberHas anyone else noticed a double standard in describing the appearance of different-race women who wear promiscuous clothing? When women of color wear tight/short clothes, they are often called “hoochies” or something of the sort, while white women in similar clothes are at worst called “skanks” (if not “hot.”) Could part of the reason be that women of color tend to have more voluminous bodies and so look more provocative in the clothing?

Kate26614ParticipantIsn’t ‘skank’ equally offensive as ‘hoochie’? I don’t believe either word is worse than the other.

Sean H.ParticipantI have never seen a difference in the perception of provocatively dressed women racially. I believe the only true issue is one of subjectivity. That issue is taste.

Priya30303ParticipantWhat I meant to say is, particularly with white men, they will find scantily-clad women such as Britney Spears attractive, but the members of TLC wearing similar clothing would be called “ghetto” and would not be gaped at.

NatalieParticipantThere is definitely a double standard when women of different races wear revealing clothing. I know that in my highschool, which is the largest highschool in Chicago–having a wide range of different races, if a white girl were to wear a mini skirt with a revealing tank top, (which is against the rules because you must be covered from neck to knee at all times) security guards, other students, even teachers will tell this girl that she is cute and her dress is not offensive. But if a black girl came to school dressed the same way, she would be labeled a ‘hoochie’ on the spot. Then she would be escorted to the discipline office where she would be given a lecture by a female security guard and countless others about how disgusting she looks. Then this same girl would either be sent home or her parents would be contacted so that they could bring her some clothes. But of course everyone pretends they can’t see a difference in the treatment of black and white girls, and the cycle continues…… I know that the girls in both situations should have followed the rules of the dress code, but when they don’t, it doesn’t mean that one has a right to pick and chose who gets in trouble and who doesn’t on the basis of color. They should both get in trouble. The same picking and choosing goes on in public everyday, outside of school, and black women who wear revealing clothing are being labeled ‘hoochies,’ ‘hookers,’ and ‘hoes,’ or whatever ‘h’ name society chooses. Who cares if people believe these women have bad taste: if you don’t like, don’t look. Treat people the way you want to be treated, no matter how they’re are dressed or what color they are.

Nicole20053ParticipantI think the word ‘skank’ or ‘skanky’ is far, far worse than ‘hootchie’. I use the word ‘skank’ to describe someone disgusting, dirty, sleazy, or morally bankrupt. ‘Hootchie’ to me means a little loose sexually but still isn’t as bad as a ‘slut’. I really never realized that people distinguised women in tight clothing of different colors by different names. To me the words ‘skank’ and ‘hootchie’ could describe people of any color. ‘Skank’ could also descibe a man. The word ‘hootchie’ has been used a lot lately in rap songs, so people who listen to rap, regardless of color, are generally the ones who used the word and it’s not necessessarily always an insult.

SR28501ParticipantReally? The members of TLC are pretty rich, famous and lusted after for being “ghetto” and for not being gaped at!

AshaParticipantPriya, the reason for that is because women of color are not supposed to be ‘sexy’! esp. not Black women. If a 17 year old Black female was to behave like Brittany Spears(have fake breasts, constantly shake her rear to the public, etc), she would be looked down upon as what u said, a Hootchie! or sluttish and of poor taste. Yet, Brittany Spears being white, she is called ‘hot’ and ‘sexy’ , ‘supercool’, etc! Also , notice that she is to an extent mocking(may not be the best word), black female urban culture and music! it all boils down to the way people in this country want things to run, and how those that have been indoctrinated with white supremacy think!

Ashley-M23497ParticipantI am a young black woman and have noticed this trend at school. There is a dress code prohibiting short shorts and skirts and low cut blouses. The Black and white girls dress in similar styles and the Black girls are usually the ones sent home for inapproproate dress. My friends always joke that the very people who fill out their clothes are the very ones sent home for wearing them, but I have also noticed another trend. Extremely thin and light black women aren’t sent home for their ‘oh so short shorts.’ I think Black America’s standard for beauty is different and when the curvier black beauties where the same clothes it looks different to our white principal. He sees it as unattractive and inappropriate bcause he has been programmed to see things with a different standard.
