Having lived in San Antonio for 12 years, I find your question interesting because I'm sure you know you are not alone among your fellow Hispanics. I knew many Hispanics in San Antonio who didn't know Spanish. Also, it's been reported that in spite of what we hear in the mainstream media about Hispanics wanting to be taught all subjects in Spanish, a substantial majority of first-generation American parents of Mexican descent want their children to succeed in the United States, and therefore want their children to learn English and not keep Spanish as their first language. Additionally, inter-marriage and dating is exremely common between Anglos and Hispanics in San Antonio (including my ex-wife and I). Just look in any Sunday edition of the San Antonio Express-News. I think your co-workers who accuse you of acting white are in the minority and may not have been here long enough to really know the way it is in San Antonio - and incresingly, the rest of the country.

I don't think some people's narrow view of blacks as inferior has anything to do with it, generally. The reason whites want a tan is the same reason some blacks straighten their hair. Though blacks don't risk getting cancer by straightening their hair as whites do when laying in the sun, if it looks aesthetically pleasing to the individual, they do it.

This may a little provocative for this forum, but I'll give it a shot. The politically correct implication we often hear in the mainstream media is that all minorities are allied against the white race in terms of idealogies, etc. In reality, nothing is further from the truth. It's been reported that in California, there are now more Asian/Caucasion marriages than Asian/Asian marriages. I think you are under the impression that since African-Americans and Asians are both minorities, that they have more in common in terms of a common opressor, etc. This is simply not true. Also, the few people I've known in my life who were half Asian and half white have identified themselves as white. And having lived in San Antonio for 13 years (my ex-wife is part Hispanic), I've known many who are half Hispanic and half white, and every one of them have identified themselves as white. This could be a partial answer to you question.

Having recently retired from the U.S. Air Force after 20 years, I find it difficult to believe the higher ups ignore her. If her 1st Sergeant ignores her, he/she is not doing their job. And it's quite right that it's possible the commander may be totally unaware of her situation. I can almost guarantee that an e-mail to the commander would take care of the problem. Respectfully, if your daughter told you her 1st Sergeant and commander won't help her, she may be not telling you the whole story. She's probably afraid of these other female airmen, especially if there have been threats of violence. If she's talked to her immediate supervisor and nothing has done, her story about higher ups not listening is more credible. She needs to go to the 1st Sergeant or commander post-haste.

The main thing is that the white/Western/Christian civilization has meticulously documented most of its atrocities. The voluminous history written by whites about white misdeeds such as colonialism, slavery, etc. dwarfs any similar works by any other race. Had other groups documented even a fraction of their own misdeeds (only to be read, studied and analyzed centuries, indeed millenia, later) as whites have documented about theirs, you could make the same case against them. We also shouldn't assume that other groups wouldn't have done the same things if they would have had the technology and weapons.

How would you like it if I asked why did a lot of housing project-living black Americans support Gore/Lieberman? Without you dismissing me as racist, let me just ask: Do THEY think Gore would really do THEM good economically? I hardly think so. Liberal programs have done far worse to blacks than conservative ideals. For one thing, the federal government has replaced the wage-earning male in much of the black community. If it weren't for these insane liberal social engineering programs adept at throwing money at everything, there wouldn't have been a lot of these problems. I know Y? Forum frowns on posters getting on a soapbox, especially if they are white, so I seriously doubt if you'll see my response.

Y? Forum would never feature a posting like Paul S.'s if it were made by a white male. Believe me, I've tried. I don't get it. Why is it OK for a non-white or a female to get on a soap-box on Y? Forum but not a white male? A white guy's personal opinion is seldom seen on this forum. C'mon, guys!

I was listening to something on talk radio that relates to this subject. The host (a female) was talking about rock groups of the '70s and '80s, and how they were classified as 'real men' - that is, super macho, masculine, etc., whereas today's popular white groups like In Sync and The Backstreet Boys are more quasi-female and sissified (her words). She went on to say that today it's the rap artists that have that macho reputation. She also said that this may be why wrestling is so popular with many young white men today. These wrestlers have taken the place of the macho rock groups, something young men need on a psychological level, apparently. I would have to say some of her points are valid. The only thing is, the macho-ness of pro wrestlers is mostly make-believe.

Since people lived in caves during the ice age(s), and the last ice age ended 12,000 years ago, I would really like to know what type of ancient civilization was in 'full swing' more than 12,000 years ago. The ancient Egyptians were at their height a mere 3,000 to 4,000 years ago. They weren't the first, but the ancient Mesopotamians go back only a little before that. As tempting as it is to rewrite history for the purposes of making a point, let's try to keep Y? Forum as accurate as possible.

When you say, 'White people dig in their noses and then put the boogers in their mouth' and ask, 'Why do whites do this?' it implies that it's just a normal thing for whites, and that whites must surely have the answer. I find it difficult to believe that someone your age would think that only whites do this. Such a disgusting habit, especially by adults, is just that - disgusting. By any race. And for you to imply that it's a habit confined to whites shows your lack of sensitivity.

I always heard it started among gangs so their weapons wouldn't be visible to the casual observer or police. I thought this was fairly common knowledge, because I've heard it several times. From gangs it quickly made it into the hip-hop culture, and from there it spread to all young men.

I would say that while I don't think homosexuals' sex lives take precedence in their lives, their sexuality, or the fact that they are homosexual, does take precedence in their lives. By this I mean that they seem to be adamant that they are gay first, then they are some other adjective, such as male/female, white/black, American, etc. I don't mean to put words in Lynn's mouth, but perhaps this is what she meant.

I would say Kentucky is no more ridiculed than, say Arkansas, Mississippi or West Virginia. The Hatfield and McCoy feud of the late 19th and early 20th centuries made big news while it was going on. Reporters from the New York Times travelled to Pike County, Ky., and had the families pose for pictures holding their guns. These photos were then published in the newspapers for all the world to see. This feud, a very small one as far as Kentucky feuds go, was over-sensationalized to the rest of the country. This, I think, ingrained in people's minds the perception of Kentuckians as being backward, low-class, violent, etc. Having said that, I must also say that while the majority of Kentuckians are not that way, many are. I know this from the experience of having grown up in Eastern Kentucky.

I've noticed this too. But much, much, more on television commercials, sit coms and movies rather than in real life. This is not to say whites don't ever do this in real life, just that, in my experience, it is illustrated much more in the above mediums.
