I’m a female muslim from the U.S., and I’ve lived in the U.S., Turkey, and China, all in areas with large muslim populations…I can tell you that in the states, you would have a very hard time finding a doctor willing to do a female circumcision; in Turkey, it is not practiced at all, and it’s not the practice among Muslims in China, either. It’s actually not a Muslim practice specifically, but dates back to pre-Islamic times in the Arabian peninsula and greater Middle East. Judgements on it are mentioned in some oral traditions ascribed to the Prophet Mohammed, so that’s partly how we know it was around before Islam. It’s also not ‘mandatory’ (ie it’s not required by law), but is rather a social convention. To my understanding, it’s also the practice among some Coptic Christians in Egypt, and other non-muslims in North Africa.

I don’t think Muslims dislike Jews any more or less that Jews dislike Muslims. In both the Torah and the Quran, you can find passages that seem to support oppression or violence against non-Jews and non-Muslims, respectively, and those are of course used to preach hate by some. Also, a lot of Muslims are really angered by the situation in Israel and the Middle East. When you feel that your people and religion are consistently treated wrongly, especially in a place where there has been ethnic and political tension and violence for so long, and nothing ever seems to get better, then you start looking, rightly or wrongly, for someone to blame. Israel is part of that equation, and being a state of mostly Jews, you get tension between Muslims and Jews.

I was married in Turkey (my husband and I are both muslim) in both a religious and a civil ceremony (they are seperate there, and religious officials are not allowed to oversee proceedings at the official civil ceremony.) Especially in countries like Turkey where religious ceremonies are not recognized by the goverment as legally binding, the civil contract/marriage certificate, etc. ‘protect’ the woman because they come with government’s backing to ensure the husband fufills his legal obligations. If a woman (or a man, for that matter,) of any religion doesn’t know what the laws are, they can be duped into a marriage that takes advantage of them. Regardless of your religious beliefs, in the U.S. a marriage needs to be legally valid to protect all parties.
