Four of every five slaves taken from Africa were men. That meant the men left in the villages in Africa had to father many households; in the Americas, African slave men were forced to mate with the few women slaves for the purpose of high production. It was something men had to do to either adapt to their surroundings or as the slave, survive. Unfortunately, because of other ‘institutions’ in this society, black men continue to father many families – it is almost a survival technique.
