Has black males’ masculinity/ego been dented by slavery? Is this why they have to be promiscuous and father children all over the place – i.e. to prove they are real men? Have they lost their true identity?

I think the type of thinking you are referring to starts from an early age. You see how the older men around you act and how they treat women, and it just seems acceptable to want to grow up and be the same way. (Although not me.) I don’t think it has ANYTHING to do with slavery or some kind of identity issue, but more with the fact that this is what type of male role models you grow up with. If I may suggest, please watch the film ‘Boyz N the Hood’. This movie explains what it’s like to grow up black better than I could by just writing in this message box. -Thanks

Four of every five slaves taken from Africa were men. That meant the men left in the villages in Africa had to father many households; in the Americas, African slave men were forced to mate with the few women slaves for the purpose of high production. It was something men had to do to either adapt to their surroundings or as the slave, survive. Unfortunately, because of other ‘institutions’ in this society, black men continue to father many families – it is almost a survival technique.

The first part about slavery times is correct, but the rest…

You’re perpetuating a myth that we as black people are forever confined to the roles created and defined for us during slavery, and you’re also denying individuality and human freedom of choice. Black men have children out of wedlock not because of some genetically selected-for need/ability to ‘breed,’ but because they have unprotected sex with partners who allow them to do so, and they frequently have unprotected sex with partners who they don’t really care about.

It has nothing to do with race; men usually have the desire to be promiscuous and often father children all over the place. There are just as many Caucasian males who have abandoned their children.

Slavery will hurt anyone’s ego, but I don’t think that it is responsible for the high rate of ‘fatherless’ children in the black community. First of all, most black men do not have children all over the place. Second, the rate of kids being born to single moms is increasing in just about every demographic. Although single parent households are much more common amoung blacks than whites. There are many reasons for this, but one of the root causes has to do with wage discrimination and the welfare system. At the time that the welfare system was introduced, most blacks in the US lived at or below poverty level. Although people worked long, hard hours, they did not have access to the jobs that paid enough to support their families. This wage and employment discrimination did terrible things to the men’s egos. Think about it: You’re working your fingers to the bone everyday, yet you can’t afford to buy your kids the basic necessities, let alone the occasional treat. Then came the welfare system, which is one of those things that started out as a decent idea, but the government screwed it up. Women with children could get financial help from the government, but only if her husband had left her. If he was living in the house, then the thinking was that he should support them. So many men, realizing that their wives could get more money by going on welfare than the men could bring home working, left their families. After all, many of them figured, they weren’t worth much as men if they couldn’t support their families anyway, so the families would be better off without them. After a decade or 2 of this, there was an entire generation of kids who grew up without their dads, and this became the way things were supposed to be in their minds. These kids grew up and repeated the cycle.

Not all black men are what you see on Ricki Lake. I do think you point is valid. Black people, especially black men were stripped of their dignity during slavery. Imagine having to witness the rape of your wife and children by slavemasters and not being able to stop them. Black men still have their man-hood questioned today, not by slavemaster but by racist cops. Although your comment was stereotypical, I appreciate you noticing that slavery played a huge role in the way blacks are today

Black Men aren’t the only men that act like this. All men do. The difference is that blacks don’t not give up thier children to adoption as quick as white Americans. Blacks are more so against abortion. So when a Black Man and woman goes though a unplanned pregnancy. The child will be there and alive. Not saying that white kill babies and give them up as a practice. Just saying that it is more prevelany in that culture.

im a black male with no children.but i do believe we are just more sexually agressive, to a point. one reason is because we have higher testosterone levels.& we are encouraged by the brainwashing in some music, (i.e. bad rap, R&B ballads). other music isnt as sex-laden as ours(corporate pressure). i also believe slavery & discrimination encourages us into the traps set up for us. schools that teach us ‘european views’ and other teaching techniques that are foreign to us. we dont dance & talk the same-should we learn exactly the same?

Slavery has nothing to do with a black man’s ego. The truth is the majority of black men that father childern and don’t care about them, could care less about what happen 400 years ago. Black men don’t take care of their childern because 1) They don’t care about if it’s their child, or 2) They want nothing to do with the mother, or 3)The mother wants nothing to do with them and won’t let the father be apart of the childs life. The sex is what make men feel like they are real men, the more sex, the more respect they get. If the woman has a child (depending on the man) they might take care of them they might not. A man is a man White, Black, Asian, or whatever.

I don’t believe this is so much a question of whether or not slavery affected black men on an egotistical level as it is a question of why (to you) it seems that black men are ‘…promiscuous and father children all over the place….’ I cannot answer this question. What I would really like to know is if you have noticed a growing trend in younger males in general fathering children they are not ready to care for? What makes you think it is predominantly black males who ‘…father children all over the place….’? It seems, to me, there are many people who are doing this…or am I wrong?

Slavery has nothing to do with the reason why some African American men are promiscuous and father many children nowadays. Those men do it because their lack of respect for women and themselves. But, there are just as many men of other races doing the same things (e.g. white men). If there would be any truth to the slavery cause of promiscuity, it would be about why white men have the number of children that they do. It was the white man who had two or more sets of families. One was with his white wife, and the others were with the slaves who he had affairs with or raped. So, with answering your question, no the egos of black men have not been dented by slavery, in that prospective.

Who really has the problem here? Blacks were robbed of their freedoms and severed from their true cultures by white kidnappers, thieves and other criminals leaving profound wounds. One was the blatant promiscuity of white males as evidenced by the legions of white, yellow, tan, light brown and brown ‘blacks’ who derived from the wholesale rape of black women by white men during slavery. Were white males suffering from dented ‘masculinity/ego’, or a lack of ‘true identity’, or trying to ‘prove they are real men’, even while holding life and death control over the very people they abused? And what mental illness impelled whites to force blacks to be ‘breeders’ like stallions or breed sows during slavery? It takes a man and a woman to make a baby, but her investment is bigger. While she can go to term once in roughly 270 days, her mate can impregnate up to maybe 800 times within that same period. The tremendous difference defines him to be a natural sexual opportunist, and bestows the responsibility of choice upon the female. Why blame him for her choices? The problem is not so much the black male as the hypocrisy with which we view his bahavior.

white males are very promiscous as well. They have many sexual partners be it male or female. Maybe they use protection or maybe the women whom they impregnant get abortions. Europeans are far more sexual than Africans they are into many sexual acts that the average African would consider deviant. Many males suffer from dented egos not just Blacks.

If someone can logically make that connection, I’d love to hear their reasoning. My guess is that it’s strictly more of a macho thing, to prove your masculinity or whatever, in combination with the fact that there is less of a social stigma involved in that community than perhaps in others. Many African-American households are led by single mothers, so I guess it stands to reason that if you were brought up in that situation, it would not seem deviant at all to continue the cycle. Missing/absent fathers is a sociological phenomena present is several ethnic groups. Irish-American families come to mind, although having children all over the place (especially if you can’t support them) is tacky no matter who does it.
