Yes, the child (a girl) has already been born. It is my opinion that this is yet another example of the United States rushing in to impose our morals on other countries. Do you see officials from the middle east trying to cut off the hands of those who steal in our country? Anyone from Singapore trying to cane our citizens for crimes commited in our country because they disagree with our justice system? This woman was born in Nigeria, raised with Muslim values, and was aware of the penalties for having sex out of marriage. It is not our job to change their government. We are not the moral police whose duty it is to enforce our own ideas about crime and punishment on those with very different belief systems. The greatest irony is that it is our country with the highest crime rates in the world. Changing other countries’ laws to reflect ours would undoubetdly encourage criminal behavior that mirrors ours since the consequences are so lenient in comparision.
