The stars were mandated by law, and failure to comply could mean anything from prison to removal to a concentration camp (this appeared as someone simply disappearing, much like in Communist Russia). People usually knew if there neighbors were Jewish and would report if they weren’t wearing the star – for rather substantial rewards.
