    Since 'Yo' is one of the traditional responses to military roll call, I'd guess it began there. Many in our African-American communities have used military service to escape poverty or street violence. Replying 'Yo' when someone calls your name becomes ingrained whether it's your sergeant hollering or your buddy from the 'hood.
