Do mentally challenged people know that they’re mentally challenged or do they think of themselves like everybody else?

I don’t know if I can answer this one completely but from my experience, being a mother of a child that has a physical disability as well as some cognitive imparement, that the answer to this question is yes they do. My son for background is one of a twin. At about a month of age, due to prematurity, the one twin suffered a lack of oxygen leaving him with a life long disability. One day,while on a family trip in the van, the child with the disability, at about age seven, unable to sit properly, fell over onto his twin. The twin without the disability, as would any sibling, yelled at him and said he was sick of it. The twin with the disability responded back in a quiet voice…this could have been you. In my opinion it depends on the disability and the environment they are raised in. If they are raised in an environment where they are predominantly with people of their own ability level, then probably less so than if they are in a “mainstream” environment. It also depends on the reception they have gotten from others around them. Here in Jacksonville we have the “Girl Without a Face” (not mentally challenged, just physically),Discovery CHannel did a special on her among other things and if you read the stories the news have done on her it is very interesting. Juliana is the name of the girl and she goes to a regular school now and one of the stories they did related her introduction to kindergarden and how those children went from pointing fingers to being her friends.
