My husband and I are both white and within the next five years we are planning on adopting a child. After doing some research, I found that there are many children who are considered ‘hard to place’ simply because they are from a minority group. Some of them do have physical, mental, or emotional disorders, but many do not. We don’t have the time to devote to a child with serious disabilities, so will probably adopt a child above the age of two from a different race. I am curious to know how others feel about this. I believe that all children just want someone to love and take care of them regardless of the color of their skin. Our families are both supportive of this, but many friends that we have told seem shocked that we would consider adopting a child that doesn’t look like us. We are both capable of having our own children but prefer adoption because there are so many children especially from minority groups who need good parents. I would like to get opinions on this especially from those who have adopted outside their race. My husbands only real concern is that someday the child may feel that they missed out on a part of their cultural heritage.
