I have heard it said that Islam is a tolerant religion and that people are free to choose their own faith although Muslims like most other religions, insists on a monopoly of the truth. I have also heard this tolerance illustrated by the fact that Jew and Christians were allowed to live and practise their way of life in the lands of the caliphate but had to pay a small tax. I also know that the koran is believed to be the actual word of God, and as such its commands are grounded in stone. But what does it have to say about someone like me who is a Buddist and is therefore considered a pagan? Would I be treated with tolerence? I am especially concerned by the tenets set out in the 9th book of the Koran regarding how ‘unbelievers’ should be treated —9.5: So when the sacred months have passed away, then slay the idolaters wherever you find them, and take them captives and besiege them and lie in wait for them in every ambush, then if they repent and keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate, leave their way free to them; surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful— Is this passage to be taken literally?
