I was wondering if nurses, doctors or morticians have ever had strange experiences when working with people who are dying/dead, such as ghosts, something strange the person said, any suggestion of life after death, etc.

I have an uncle who was a pilot, and he used to fly passengers and cargo to and from Honduras. Once he had to fly the body of an extremely overweight woman back to Honduras. She was so large they had to take the top off the casket and place it on its side next to my uncle, the pilot. According to him, as the airplane gained altitude, it forced air from the woman’s lungs and she groaned. He always carried a sidearm and he pulled it and told the woman that if she moved he was going to kill her again!

I’m a nurse, and there’s a phenomenon called “angular movement.” Sometimes immediately after death a person may open his eyes or even sit up. It’s caused by involuntary muscle contraction, but boy is it scary!

I am a registered nurse and have worked extensively with people who are dying. I was sitting with a dying man in the middle of the night with only a night light on in the corner. He suddenly became very alert and said the room had gotten so bright so quickly and could I please turn the lights down a little. A little later, he looked toward the door and said, ‘Come on in!’ He was never able to tell me what or who he saw at the door. A couple hours later, he died. I’ve also had patients who have told me in the morning that ‘Today is the day’ and they do die that day. Sometimes people get a tremendous burst of energy a day or two before they die, giving their families a false sense that they are getting better.

I don’t really have an opinion about life after death, but I like to believe that our deceased loved ones are all around us, helping us get through life. This will sound very strange, but I do get some personal satisfaction and fulfillment from being with people when they die. I enjoy making their last hours as comfortable as possible for them and their families. To be with someone when you are the only thing connecting them to this world and the next, whatever it may be, is truly awesome to me.

I don’t work with death but I can tell you with absolute certainty that ghosts do exist. I work in a jail that has had at least 3 suicides, 2 of them since I started working there, and I and most of my co-workers have seen things that have no scientific explanation. Most of us have seen things walk down the hall with our periferal vision. One night I was sitting at my desk and I saw someone or something walk down the hallway I had to get up and investigate. This was about 2 am and all the inmates were locked up. I quickly got up and walked over to the corner where I thought I saw someone which was only a few feet away but there was nothing to see. On several occasions the shower in one of the cells came on by itself. At first I thought someone was playing a joke but the very last time I was standing only 3 or 4 feet away from the cell. The inmates were locked in the inner cell and could not have done it. To be absolutely sure of this I stayed where I was and called for another officer to come to the hallway. When he arrived I went into the cell and checked the inner doors. They were both locked with the inmates inside. There is no possible way they could have turned the shower on and then went back into their bunks without me hearing the door shut. I have tried to close the doors myself without making a loud racket but it’s impossible. On another occasion a dark transparent figure was caught on surveillance camera following an officer around in the kitchen. The latest thing I experienced was when I opened a cell to move a couple of inmates and as I looked over at the empty shower stall something hit the inside of the shower curtain! It kind of freaked me out and scared me for a while. I had to reassure myself that whatever presence is in the jail has never hurt anyone and hopefully never will!
