Why do blacks and other people of color insist on being hyphenated – Americans? Why African – American? Why Mexican – American? Is there something wrong with being just plain ol’ American? I don’t know of any group of white people who go around insisting on being called German-Americans or English-Americans or Dutch-Americans or any other Hyphenated-American. Why is it necessary to be distinguished from whites in this manner?
