My sister in law has always preferred to date black men. She has been in a good relationship with a man now for six years. She has expressed the desire to be married to him many times, to no avail. When we mention it to him, he laughs and says, ‘Maybe someday.’ After two ectopic pregnancies, she underwent in vitro fertilization and recently gave birth to twins. He bought her a nice house prior to the birth and takes very good care of her. We like him very much, and have no problems with him other than the fact that he will not marry her, but is more than willing to have children with her. We are curious if this reluctance to marry is a commonality among African American males or if he is just a commitment phobe.
