I happened to be watching one of those TV court shows (Divorce Court) today and was surprised by the remarks made by the judge, who was a black woman. The plaintiff, also a black woman, was ridiculed by the judge because she was dating white and Mexican men. The judge said something like, ‘Do you think you have to go out and test all the races? You’re just a universal woman, aren’t you?’ Had the judge been white and the plaintiff been a white woman dating non-white men, the judge’s remarks would have been considered very racist. It probably would have even made it onto the national news. But since the judge who actually made the racist remarks is black, it seems to be no big deal. Why is this?
