AdamParticipantI’m saddened that you had to be introduced to the United States in such a negative fashion, but allow me to assure that it is not the same everywhere. There are a lot of places that are chock-full of nice, generous people. I hope you don’t honestly think that the bad experience you had is an accurate generalization for the rest of the country. In response to your other question, I think that America is pretty much fed up with what other countries think. We are told every day by our media that the rest of the world hates us just because we are American, and since we don’t have the time to find out if this is true, why not believe it (please note the sarcasm). Americans have enough problems AT HOME without having to worry about what our neighbors think. However, Bernice, please try to experience more of the United States before you decide your opinion.

Susan RespessParticipantMaybe you’ve had an unusual run of meeting grumps. Have you traveled in the South? I’d say welcome! I think you’d see a different atttitude in less populated areas. I was taking a seminar on a large college campus in Pennsylvania and was surprised to see the difference in the demeanor of folks there. The students seemed unhappy and kind of hostile. I thought it might be the winter weather, rainy, cloudy, cold. But perhaps, it’s the high-population centers in which people are more wary of strangers and may be stressed and self-absorbed because of high-pressure job environments.

DanielPfalmerParticipantMany Americans are arrogant and xenophobic. It comes from all the nationalism that is passed off as normal. All the “America is the greatest country on earth” and “God Bless America”. Many people see other cultures as inferior and weird rather than just different. Also they are so isolated that they never aver realize that there are people that are different then them. And no the don’t care if the world likes America. The world hates America and no one cares.

MarshaGParticipantAs in any society there are good people and not-so-good people, helpful people and those that just don’t give a damn. I wish that you could run across some of the good ones! Please do not judge all of America by the encounters you have experienced so far. America is a relatively young country and still has some ‘growing up’ to do, so that may explain the attitudes that you have had to put up with. I hope you have better luck in the future.
