Female circumcision is performed usually to prevent intercourse and thus preserve virginity before marriage. It involves the stitching-up of the vagina to physically prevent penetration. In more extreme cases, I have heard that the inner labia is also removed. Often practiced among traditional African tribes and other groups, it is usually performed on young girls at puberty. The agony it inflicts on the grls (there is usually no anesthetic) and the risk of death has led to many governments outlawing the practice. However, the operation is often held as essential to tribal honor and continues to be practiced on millions of girls every year.

Female circumcision, or female genital mutilation, is practiced many different ways, depending on the region and country. It is generally when a woman's clitoris and perhaps some or all of the surrounding genitalia are removed, often using unsterile implements such as razor blades, rocks, scissors and other other sharp objects. Usually the victim receives no anesthetic, and the healing process involves the woman being bound, legs together, for a long period of time as scar tissue grows over. A small hole is kept open for urine to escape. The severity of the mutilation can range from removal of only the clitoris to complete removal of the clitoris and both inner and outer labia. This painful removal of nerve endings leaves the woman lackingthe ability for sexual arousal or pleasure for the rest of her life. People make many claims about the reason this is practiced: some say it is due to the Muslim faith (although the Koran says nothing about it); others might say it is a cultural practice; others may suggest that the men of those regions feel more secure that their wives won't cheat on them if they feel neither desire nor pleasure. Female genital mutilation is a horrible and dangerous practice. Many women die from it every year, because of the unclean situations in which they are butchered. Circumcised women also often have difficulty urinating, painful periods and painful and very dangerous childbirths, and they have a high risk of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease and infections. Within the last five years, the United States has realized the cruelty of female genital mutilation and now recognizes it as a valid reason to claim asylum.

It is typically a 'rite of passage' for women in some under-developed countries. However, 'female circumcision' is a misnomer. It is in fact, genital mutilation, as the girl's clitoris is (usually) removed and her vagina is sewn shut. This ritual is to keep her 'pure' for mariage

I'm no expert on the subject, but i do know that this is done in certain places in Africa. It is done by cutting out the clitoris(sometimes with glass and other painful things) so that the women cannot become pregnant. It is done because it stops a women from having sex(ie a woman cannot receive pleasure without her clitoris).

There are 2 sorts of female circumcision (FGM), one of which is pharaonic (I don't know what the other type is called.) Pharaonic FGM is when the whole of the clitoris is removed and the woman has her vagina sewn up, with just a small whole left for urine and menstrual blood - this is not practiced in Egypt, but is by some women in Sudan. Some people wrongly believe that Islam states women should be circumcised - this is not true, and Al Azhar has ruled that it is not obligatory under Islamic law - women in Saudi Arabia are not circumcised. In Egypt it is now illegal for a doctor to circumcise a woman, but, as with most other things, if the price is right ... In the villages the 'operation' is performed by a 'midwife'. Generally women are considered unclean if they haven't been circumcised, or some believe an uncircumcised woman will have an uncontrollable sex drive. Many girls have died from this procedure, but some of the more enlightened village families are choosing not to circumcise their daughters. Upper class families tend not to have their daughters circumcised. This practice is seen as a woman's issue, it is the mothers and grandmothers that circumcise their daughters and granddaughters.

Several years ago I watched a program on TV about this surgery being performed on young girls for the purpose of diminishing their sexual pleasure as adults. I don't recall the country. Female circumcision is the removal of the clitoris. The purpose: husands do not need to be concerned their wives will have sex with anyone outside the marriage.

This is a cultural practice and is not guided by religion. I say this because there once was the belief that Islamic people practiced this. While it is true there are some 'fringe' groups that identify themselves as Islamic and practice Female Genital Mutilation, it is not a mandated Islamic practice. It can be and usually is, used to control the female as a wife. One idea is that she gets no pleasure from sexual intercourse, and therefor will not cheat on her husband. The torture becomes even worse when she is ripped open by her husband or childbirth. She is then 'sewn up' to become small again, and more pleasurable to her husband. There is a famouse model, her name is Warus. She is a survivor of FGM and tells her whole story with complete frankness. The entire story is very compelling. For her, a sharp rock was used to cut. There was no aniseptic used, nor any dulling of sensation in the area. The rock cut off the clit, and she was put in a tent to recover. Infection is very likely, and many complications can arise, as with all medical procedures. There is no reverse or fixing this type of procedure once performed.
