I have to admit the keg of beer one was pretty weird. I suspect we all more sensitive to the outlandish things of other cultures and overlook our own. As a white ‘burbs kind of guy, I think those souped-up cars that can hop up and down are pretty strange. But come to think of it, Sport Utility Vehicles that never leave the road (like mine) are kind of odd, also. Some of this is publicity, also. The media publish what they think their readers will read. The weird, disgusting stuff that “others” do always is interesting. (National Geographic Magazine has made hay with this for a century!) The weird, disgusting stuff that your own culture does is, frankly, just as weird and disgusting.

Part of the answer is numbers. Frankly, there are more white people around, so there is more of a chance that a white person will be involved in a behavior, or that the behavior will be noticed. The other part of the answer is that you are incorrect in your assumptions. White kids are hardly the only ones killing other kids or adults. Black-on-black violence is a quick example. Gang violence is also widespread, crossing ethnic boundaries. And for everyone who seems to think that all serial killers are white, what about that Latino serial killer who was arrested several weeks ago? So, getting back to the first point: Maybe you think that only white people do nasty things because you have a negative opinion of white people and fail to recognize the many valid examples of non-whites doing nasty things.

I don’t see any people of color doing this kind of stuff, unless they grew up with white people or hang around them too much. I’m not talking about all white people because I have some cool white friends. But do many white people not have any self-esteem?

White kids might do some nasty stuff, but what about the nasty stuff the African-American college kids do when they participate in “Freaknik” in Atlanta? I don’t see any white kids doing that stuff. Also, you commented on white kids killing other white kids. What about all the African-American, Latino and Asian kids in gangs who kill each other? There’s an awful lot of killing going on, and it’s not all done by whites. I don’t think lack of self-confidence has anything to do with it. It’s lack of self-control and lack of respect for anyone. Parents have abdicated their responsibility to teachers, police officers and anyone who will do anything so they don’t have to. Don’t blame the kids, blame the parents.

Rapes, fires, and physical assaults all took place, and these were white kids. I find it interesting that very often white people comment on how minorities (especially blacks) are too sensitive about racial matters, but when Cheemama posed her question, all the respondents jumped to point out that other ethnic groups are far worse than whites. Believe me, you won’t find too many blacks eating fecal matter voluntarily, and the majority of serial killers are white, whether you like it or not. Just as whites think it’s valid to point out that statistically, the number of minority criminals is higher, minorities find it equally valid to point out similar statistics about whites. You might not like it, as we might not like it, but it’s true.

It is no secret how the police/justice system treats visible minorities in the United States. When the white public hears about “one of their own” committing a heinous crime, it’s shocking, whereas a minority committing the same crime is looked upon as exhibiting “typical” minority behavior.

The world in general thinks it’s Americans. When you talk about crazy, ask anyone from Argentina to Zaire and they will tell you that Americans in general (no matter what race), and those raised or living in American society (like that Latino serial killer), are the wackiest of people. A good standard of living (when you don’t worry about having food to eat) plus racial hatred, plus a stressing rat race and dog-eat-dog materialism creat a society in which the weak (no matter what race or social status) simply crack up and lose it, being absorbed into abnormal practices and conducts. The conducts that you all mention (souped-up cars that hop, the dirty keg contest, gang violence, serial killers, etc.) are not black or white things, they are American things.

I often ask myself why this is, especially when they have to be rescued. For example, I read about this man who decided he wanted to be closer to God so he went out into the desert in Australia for 40 days. He had to be rescued because the fool ran out of food and was severely dehydrated. Something should have told him that what he was doing was foolish, especially when even nomadic people refused to live in this desert.
I’ve come to realize that people of color have too many burdens to face. We don’t have enough time to experiment with things that will cause us harm.

While I understand that there are foolish people in every nationality, it would seem that more foolishness tends to come from the Caucasian populous. For example, I’ve never had the notion of swimming with sharks while holding bloody meat; or lying in a sleeping bag full of poisonous snakes. Also, while other groups seem to be stuck with the tag of being sexually promiscuous, it would seem that (some) Caucasian women would like to obtain the title of sleeping with the most men in a certain time period. There are plenty of other examples, but I believe the point has been made. I would like to know why. Don’t think I’m stating that all Caucasians are this way, as I know this is not true; however, the evidence is there. Is this just foolhardiness on the part of certain idividuals? And if so, why does it seem that these idividuals tend to be European Americans?

Americans are no crazier than your people. I won’t go into the relative merits of living in the United States vs. living in Venezuela because there really isn’t room here. Suffice to say that lots of people immigrate to the United States. Not too many immigrate to your country.

I do note that the most bizzare behaviors and incidents reported by the media, that I recall, are by whites. For example if I heard that a a man shot 5 people on the NY subway, I would not assume the race of the perpetrator. If it was reported that a man has murdered a number of men, put their genitals in jars, ate their intestines and and had sex with the skulls, I’ll bet it was a white person. I don’t say this due to some racist belief about whites. I don’t say this to denigrate whites and elevate minorities. There is a long list of examples such as Dalmer, Gacy, etc. BTW I don’t buy the shock value rationale for only reporting weird white behavior (‘can you believe that a white person did this?’). If other ethnic/racial groups performed bizzare behaviors the media would be all over it. Similarly I don’t buy the numbers argument. Whites are a relative minority in the world. Finally I would differentiate unusual/different behavior from bizzare behavior. Eating excrement is over the edge. Remember ‘Pink Flamingos’. I am curious about this as well.
