I grew up in a Lutheran private school where we were taught that our bodies were God’s temple, so to harm them would be to harm the temple of God. They also used this logic to teach us that piercings, tatoos, drugs, alchohol, and sex outside of marraige would also damage our souls. I doubt any of that is in the bible, but when I was a child it scared me enough to believe it.

Suicide is the murder of one’s own person, which is most definitely a sin. However, a mortal sin, the kind that merits eternal damnation, is one that entails a complete awareness and acceptance of what you are doing. Some who commit suicide are not aware of their faults because of a serious mental illness. I have been taught that they have a chance of purgatory and/or heaven.
