Alice B.ParticipantDirty public toilet seats is a pet peeve of mine, and I am convinced that if people (especially women) would actually sit on the seat instead of hovering over it and spraying it with urine, toilet seats would not be so nasty. People have one of the greatest things in the world for warding off germs: it’s called skin. And yes, I eat off the same spoon I’m cooking from, because I live alone. I also drink directly from the same carton for the same reason. And who cares if people kiss when they first wake up before brushing their teeth?

Anna23818Participant-I don’t know any white *women* who sit on a public toilet, unless perhaps it’s totally clean and dry and there are some of those paper covers. -I don’t see the spoon tasting thing as racialized, as I’ve seen this behavior cross racial boundaries. I also think it’s habitual if you’re used to cooking for your family. -Movies are always fantasy, bigger and prettier and better smelling than real life. I don’t think most people kiss without brushing. -As far as soap goes, I think women generally buy a ton of bath crap, because we’re programmed to believe we smell or are dirty if we don’t. I can’t speak for the men but no white woman I know uses just a bar of soap without some kind of brush, pouf, washcloth or bath sponge.

Kelly26559ParticipantDo you think white people are aliens or something? We are not strange beings who all act in an odd way. Your questions shouldnt even be posted they are so dumb. Of course white people do not all act like that. Every race has certain people who do not look after themselves.

AshleyParticipantYes, what do you want us to do? Pee our pants! Ummm, I don’t think so! Yes i use a bar of soap. Well, I used to. Now I use body wash and a scrubby thing. What is wrong with kissing someone without brushing your teeth? Don’t you want to show the person just how much you love them. When they are cooking they lick the spoon before putting it back in because they are cooking it. They need to try it to make sure it is good. if you have a problem withit then cook it yourself!!

Just-LookingParticipant-I’m white and I’ve been sitting on public toilets for 20 years and never caught an infection, not even a pimple, so I don’t see any reason not to. However, my mother taught me absolutely never to sit, so this may be a generational rather than a ‘white’ thing. (May I ask everyone who doesn’t sit whether you wipe up after yourselves when you’re done? Many people don’t, of all races, and it’s disgusting.) -When cooking or eating, I only double-dip if I’m all alone or just with my girlfriend. Never with guests. Yech. Yes, everyone I’ve ever seen double-dipping has been white. -I kiss in the morning before brushing my teeth but I do worry a bit about my breath, so it’s usually more ‘peck’ than passionate. Remember, though, that everyone in the movies has imaginary perfect breath. -I don’t use a washcloth when bathing unless I’m really sweaty or muddy, because my skin is sensitive and if I scrub I’ll be itching all day. I find that a good rubdown with the towel afterward seems to exfoliate adequately. This may actually be a ‘white’ thing, because paler skin may tend to be dryer or thinner or something, or perhaps it just turns redder and looks worse when scrubbed. Also, maybe dead skin shows more against a darker background. Maybe all us white people are going around with ashy skin and don’t even know it. I think that’s a distinct possibility. I’ve also noticed some of my black friends seem to have a higher standard of personal hygiene or to be more aware of cleanliness issues (or just more squeamish) than my white friends, and I think Mary’s impression that white people are customarily less vigilant about hygiene may be justified to an extent. However, as with the washcloth question, maybe there are practical reasons for some of the differences. Also, in my experiences, various white cultures differ in their customs. Sorry for the long answer, hope I didn’t run over 150 words, but they’re good questions.

ElenaParticipantUnless they are soiled and dirty I sit on public toilet seats. When cooking I have been known to sneak a taste from the spoon and put it back in the pot. I don’t think it’s right. I know it’s wrong. It’s like one of life’s guilty pleasures. I Kiss my husband in the morning without brushing my teeth. I have morning breath, he has morning breath, I love him anyway and I am under the impression that he loves me. I hate washcloths and at home I usually scour myself with a loofah. However, when I shower at the gym (where BTW I sit on the toilet seat) I just lather up with my bare hands. Last time I checked I was black. It is possible that the things you are observing are regional or even personal and not racial preferences.

KellyMemberwho cares what other people’s hygine is. I’m sure there’s been at least one occasion that you yourself have sat down on the toilet seat at the gas station, or maybe you wanted to taste a dish that you were preparing for a date, or perhaps you couldn’t exfoiliate one day. i think we will all be okay if we just relax, nothing has to be 100% germ free in order for us to use it. we as humans have been around for a long time and i think that a little dirt won’t hurt. second of all, you definately do not have to be white to do those sort of things. I am white myself and do all of the listed items with pure content as do all of my friends which happen to be from a polethra of different nationalities. but seriously… who cares as long as you don’t stink, bathe regurally, and make an effort to look a little kempt then to put it in the words of andre and big boi ‘it ain’t no thang but a chicken wang’

Ruth G.MemberThis is a response to one of the responses. We don’t do #2’s in public restrooms. It’s annoying to walk into a public restroom that stinks to high heaven so I am courteous of others. Can they be courteous and poop at home.

J21158ParticipantI do all of those things but not all White people do…I don’t understand what’s wrong with them. FYI: It is easier to catch germs from picking up keys that you drop on the street and touching door knobs than sitting on a toilet seat.

Corrin31861ParticipantI NEVER sit on a public toilet seat that is gross!!!I don’t kiss in the morning without brushing my teeth unless its a quick peck. Yes sometimes i forget to get a washcloth and just use the bar of soap and the only time I lick the spoon when I am cooking is if Im cooking just for me.I am very white with blonde hair and blue eyes so I hope this answers your questions

AP24981ParticipantI’m surprised to hear that any of these things are ‘white’ things, because all my friends of all races taste with the spoon while they are cooking- if it is for immediate family only. None of us would do this when cooking for company. Ditto the washcloth thing- I lived in a dorm for 4 years, and women of all races did (and did not) use washcloths- no link there. As for the toilet seats, well, that is just disgusting and NO ONE I know of any race admits to sitting on public toilet seats. Maybe this is more of a regional thing than racial thing.
