NickParticipantI have had many years experience delivering pizza while in college. 9 times out of 10 black people will not tip. All you people talk about service, how much service can you give while delivering pizza. Be nice and smil thats about it. Make sure you get it hot. The thing is people allready know if there giving you a tip before you even get to the door. Gas in ohio is about 2 bucks a gallon, and it snows alot. People usually give waitress at least 10% (not that they dont deserve it) but what about the pizza guy? He gets the pizza, gets in his car drives to your house, who knows how far, and in the rain, snow and every other kind of weather. That cost gas and wear and tear on your car. Yea u might get a porting of the delivery charge 50cents or a dollar if you lucky. My point is your to damn lazy to off your butt and go get the pizza yourself, you should be nice and tip the guy for bringing it to YOUR HOUSE…. Just like a waitress who only brings it to YOUR TABLE!

Tim B.ParticipantI have been a bartender for ten years and yes unfortunatly it does seem true that minorities as a general rule do tip less or not at all. That being said, I’ve had amazing tips from some of them, and horrible tips from whites. I hear the ‘I don’t have any extra money’ line a lot, my anwer is, in my profession you end up working with lots of disadvantaged people. They still tip great. If you don’t have the money, don’t go out. It is an insult to us, and how would you like to not get paid? Think of it as good karma. P.S. I don’t mean this to offend anyone, and I certainly respect what they do for our country, but GI’s of ALL races tend to be the worst tippers in my experience.

Lindsay B.MemberHaving lived in Guatemala for two years, i can understand why many Latinos might not tip. In guatemala and many latin american countries, the people serving the food are usually part of the family that owns the restaurant. They see the money regardless of whether the customer leaves a tip. It is not customary to tip in the villages. It is different in more touristy towns where the businesses are not family owned, and where foreigners are more common. Many people come to the US and don’t realize that servers are paid next to nothing because tips are included/assumed to supplement their income. I never got a paycheck–I was a waitress for two years. i didn’t see huge difference between races, but my restaurant was pretty upscale, and mostly served to white folks. and some of them were cheap as hell. and among my friends, those of us that have been servers tip much more than some of our other friends who believe that they are leaving a decent tip, when a server might see it as less than generous.

Mike22084ParticipantLet me put the argument this way. I too deliver pizzas. I deliver to a region that is probably about 80% white and 20% black. I get many tips from my black customers and it would be unfair to say that all black people don’t tip. I will say this though. If I lumped all of my customers together that didn’t tip me. I’d say that 49 out of 50 of my non tippers were black. Why is that. I treat every person as a potential tipper. I am just as polite and quick with my black customers as I am with my white. So, what is the real reason?

Sharon BParticipantI believe that your observations tipping habits may be accurate in your situation but personally it has nothing to do with race. I don’t tip my plumber, mail carrier or any other service person just as I am not tipped at work for doing my job. Why is it acceptable for restaurant owners to expect me to pay their people a living wage. I would rather pay more for the meal and know that the staff is being paid properly.

Mary19785Participanti have been a server for a little over a year now and i can count on 2 hands how many times i have been stiffed. it doesn’t happen very often. 7 out of the 10 times it has happened has been by black people. most of the people who live in this town are white. don’t get me wrong, i have some white people that tip me very poorly and some black people that tip me very very well. i really try not to assume anything about my guests. i am just confused about why black people generally do not tip well?
