Bobby S.ParticipantYou seemed to have forgotten what this website is all about. That young lady was just simply asking a question and you jump all over her because of that chip you are carrying. I am Asian and I know what how it feels to be looked down upon. However, I also know that responding to a questions with aggression and a bad attitude does not help to educate the person asking the questions. You need to clear your head and take the time to try to assist, educate, and just plain help others to understand.

Rhonda-P-Outlaw19544ParticipantTypical of a silly, petulant white man to make such an ASSinine statement. I reiterate: IF WE WISH TO CELEBRATE OUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS THAT IS NOT THE BUSINESS OF WHITE PEOPLE, OR ANY OTHER GROUP OF PEOPLE!! We CEASED being white folk’s business when SLAVERY was deemed illegal in this country. As for ‘putting us on ‘your’ payroll’, don’t be an A-hole. Businesses aren’t doing US a favor anymore than WE’RE doing big business a favor. We have a skills/knowledge/education to do a job; that is what we bring to a company. In exchange, we are PAID to do that job. No FAVORS on either end. In the future, if you’re going to discuss anything, particularly issues regarding race, remember to discuss it intelligently. And once again damASSa…as an AFRICAN AMERICAN woman, it’s NONE OF YOUR DAMN BUSINESS if I choose to celebrate the accomplishments of MY MY MYYYYY people. I am a regular member of this forum and will verbally slice and dice anyone of any color who dares to get stupid with me. GET IT?? Good!

MonicaParticipantAfrican Americans did NOT invent country music. It came from the folk-music traditions of the people of English/Scottish/Irish descent in the Southern United States. To deny the white roots of country music would be as ignorant as saying white people invented jazz. That being said, there are definitely instances of each group affecting the other, like Cowboy Troy in country music and Diana Krall in jazz.

LynneParticipantWhy are you so indignant about this? There are plenty of scholarships based on limiting criteria of ALL KINDS. Religious organizations offer scholarships to members of their own groups. Women’s organizations offer them to women. Some are offered to students in specific fields of study. If you fill out an application for a scholarship for low income minorities and you’re not a minority, why should you get one? Would you expect to get a football scholarship if you don’t play the sport?

TracieParticipantI don’t think it’s an issue of the celebration of achievements of black people. I think it’s that it is so socially acceptable that black people can be proud and make fun of white people on TV and white people cannot do such a thing without causing some sort of riot. If your child makes the Honor Roll, by all means, celebrate that child’s achievements. Halle Berry and Denzel are wonderful actors. I probably wouldn’t have survived my childhood if it weren’t for the invention of the peanut butter sandwich (if you don’t understand that, do some research). I would never hold another person as a slave regardless of color. When a person deserves my respect, I give it. There are plenty of white people I don’t respect and plenty of black people I do. My mentor in high school was a black lady. What I am saying is that why does it always end up a race thing? I think it is not the white people who have to get over it, it’s the black people who should get over it. Slavery is gone. Don’t think we owe you something because of what people did over 100 years ago. Newsflash: we had no control over that. As far as the ‘African American’ thing goes, I don’t call myself an ‘Irish-English-Native American’. I am American. That’s it. Just plain American. I happen to be white. Unless you were actually born in Africa, you are American. That’s it. Just plain American. You happen to be black.

JordanParticipantUnfortunately whites have ruined being able to display pride. In the past being proud of being white was always attached with hating minorities. I think it is a great thing that BET is doing by having a seperate awards show. It makes them feel like they are getting recognition that mainstreem entertainment has denied them. but does this not mean that they are segregating themselves even further? perhaps but it isn’t like the country music awards are doing their part either.

angie7519620ParticipantI’m African-American and I was denied financial aid and scholarships as well as my brother who was an straight A student because financially we didnt qualify, basiclly we weren’t poor enough for financial assistance and not rich enough to afford college on our own. So, like the majority of college students we worked our way thru college. I have found alot of things in this society is like that, for example i have noticed that the only kids that get into the best daycare programs are the families with lower income were they pay nothing or verly little while parents that make a decent income who are willing to pay whatever just to get there kid in decent daycare program is denied. Also its not fair to assume that the majority of us are low income either. Most of us are just as hardworking and striving for a better quality of like just like I’m sure you are.

K.ParticipantIf this is the case then I won’t hear another Italian go on about their Grandma’s ‘gravy’. I won’t hear another Irish person tell me about stepping out on St. Patrick’s Day. The differences make this country an interesting place to live. For some reason people are threatened when black people celebrate their own culture and successes. Blacks aren’t the only group to celebrate, nor should we be. Tracie, you say ‘Don’t think we owe you something because of what people did over 100 years ago.’ That’s the whole point of the NAACP Awards and the BET Awards, blacks aren’t looking to you for recognition, we are giving it to the people in the community as a sign of respect and support, it has nothing to do with white people at all.

Sara19644ParticipantI too am confused by self segregating award shows, be it black, hispanic, country, hip-hop, r&b / soul, whatever. I find that in an attempt to give awards to a select group, based on ethnicity or musical preference, it further fuels racist attitudes. I mention music as a form of segregation as well due to the fact that most music stores have divided their musical genres by race, aside from classical and jazz. Next time you visit a music store, see for yourself…
