RhiannonMemberI teach at a university, and my students love the Jerry Springer show. Why do young people like this show so much?

SR28488ParticipantHave you ever watched The Jerry Springer Show? It’s like a cartoon or a satire, except it’s real. It’s so bad and trashy that it keeps me captivated – and it’s really funny, too. My friend has the Jerry Springer: Too Hot for TV video (with all the censored outtakes) and we love it. We don’t get to see such outrageous people in real life.

SeemaParticipantI think many young people watch Jerry Springer and like it because it has the same qualities soap operas have: The characters are (or seem to be) fake. Most young people will never really go through problems like those on the show; if they do go through something similar, it will probably be to a smaller degree. Basically, it’s just a form of entertainment where you can laugh at somebody else because they have a problem. Although that isn’t commendable for real life, I think most viewers know this is only entertainment, and I hope they would have enough discretion to act differently in a real situation.

MaryParticipantIt’s one show that I try never to miss, although I don’t have a definite idea why, either. I was raised to be non-violent and non-confrontational, so it amazes me when I see how some of these people behave, and speak to each other. I find the studio audience more disturbing than the folks on stage. The audience hoots and hollers for more, while they sit back and laugh as people’s lives are being trashed.
