I have noticed that many people, especially white people, are moving to gated communities. These gated communities are showing up all over, including urban, suburban and rural areas. Does anyone know why gated communities have become so popular, even in rural areas where security isn’t much of an issue?

Well, the only thing behind the gates is just a better reassurance of ‘security.’ I used to live in Sarasota, Florida, which has an area of town that is completely older, upper class, wealthy white people. There is no crime there, but the people must be terrified of something, because so many of the ritzy condos have gates, passwords, keys, tokens, guards, and punchpads to get through. I literally had to go through 3 different types of security gates/punchpads to get to this one woman’s home. The best answer I can give is that these people must have an intense fear of the ‘other’, they feel that their isolation (not just behind the gate, but living in an isolated, distant part of town as well) brings safety and also status. If you have to live among the ‘common folk’, then these people pity you, because to them that means you must be too poor to afford it.
