KerryMemberI was raised in a ‘good’ church- stable, grounded, loving. But it wasn’t right for me. I was supposed to ‘accept’ things that I couldn’t. I searched, because I knew I needed something spiritual. I liked a lot of the Eastern philosophies, but there was still a fatal flaw. In the end, I’m a Witch. It’s not for everybody, I don’t think there is or should be one religion for everybody. But it is for me. My gods make sense to me.

Nicole B.ParticipantMy family are Jehovah’s Witnesses. What turned me away from that is the immense and constant hypocrisy I’ve seen for all of my life. All my life I was taught that ‘God is great’ ‘God is love’ but that too was all lies. I feel all religions are fighting for sovereignty to say they are the only ones that know what God wants but, really are fighting for nothing because there is no God. Plus religion is nothing more than a tool that people use to get the people to do exactly what they want. That’s why I detest organized religion with a passion.

Michael20671ParticipantI remember, back when I was young, not understanding why God said, ‘They shall become like us,’ when Adam and Eve bit into the apple. I came up with an explanation that I accepted, but near the end of my sophomore year of high school, I started reading Isaac Asimov on the Bible (being a big fan of his fiction, and a Christian, I thought: two things I love!). It addressed the view that, though this plural nature of God is often cited as evidence for the Trinity, it’s more likely a remnant from polytheistic forerunners of Judaism, from which Christianity sprang. This seemed a much better explanation, and that caused me to question my faith. By the beginning of my junior year, I had rejected Christianity.

CattMemberI turned from my religion because of the effect the negativity had on me, mentally & emotionally. I was taught that I was a miserable, unworthy creature who accumulated sin simply by existing. That no amount of good works or begging for forgiveness could make up for my abhorrent existence. That my only hope to escape eternal damnation was the whim of God the Father. I spent my childhood and most of my twenties loathing myself and feeling guilt for every thought and emotion, and for any good thing that happened to me, which I could not possibly deserve. I finally turned away and have never looked back. While I have raised my children to be compassionate, charitable and forgiving, I will never take the chance of taking them to a church where they could be subjected to the beliefs I was taught.

Kat IngersollMemberI started questioning my faith after breaking off a relationship with an emotionally, verbally, and sexually abusive partner. The guy was a quadriplegic from spina bifida, and used his condition to manipulate people. He spread lies about our relationship in our church and the congregation, despite having known me for much longer and witnessed him bossing me around, believed him. I decided to leave the church in order to get my own head together and threw myself into volunteer work at the local rescue mission. Despite being the most dependable volunteer they had, they constantly ‘tested’ me to see if I was Christian enough for their standards. It turned me off to volunteering for them, even though I enjoyed the work immensely. The proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back was during my grandmother’s funeral, where a woman that went to our church told me that I needed to ‘change’ the man I was dating (and later married) because he is an atheist, even though he treated me better than any supposedly Christian man I had ever dated. At the time, I was researching other religions out of curiosity and found that Wicca and Taoism more closely fit into my belief system.
