BarbParticipantAs a Jewish woman, I’ve always been a bit flummoxed when I have to check off my race on a form (including the one for this post. I suppose the obvious choice is white/Caucasian, but that just doesn’t feel quite right – maybe because I know that the people who are really obsessed with their whiteness (i.e., white supremacists and their ilk) certainly don’t consider Jews ‘white.’ Judaism is a religion, but it’s also an ethnicity. I was raised as a reform Jew and am basically nonobservant, but I still identify myself as a Jew ethnically/culturally. This confuses me on two fronts: not only does it not feel quite accurate to list my religion as Jewish (my religious beliefs are a bit of a spiritual hodge-podge), but it also doesn’t feel quite right to list my race without identifying myself as Jewish. Just a question that comes up whenever I have to fill out these forms. I wonder if any other Jewish people out there feel the same unease I do about this.
