Patrick-Wood19929ParticipantIn Oriental and other far Eastern cultures, the individual is superceded by the drives of the group. Eastern society functions like a living organism that depends on the harmonization of every individual cell. Western society is a self-cannibalizing organism; one where individual cells seek to monopolize and destroy other cells for personal benefit. Western society will destroy itself through the inequities caused by capitalism. Why does Western culture attach such importance to the individual? Is not individuality an illusion? Why cannot people overcome their egos, in order to function in a more effective group dynamic? I come from one of the more affluent and educated sectors of Canadian society. I have enjoyed to a large extent the benefits of Western society. However, I have come to reject the values on which Western society is based. It would be desirable to have feedback from both those who empathise and those that are in complete disagreement. I have yet to establish or formulate a complete and permanent opinion of the Western world (the US, Canada, Europe).
