Can someone explain to me why we tip 15-20%? Assume I'm eating at a reasonably good restraunt and the bill is around $80.00 plus tax (CA) of $6.00, total is $85.60. I would tip $12.00. But this seems very high. The waiter (waitress) would take my order, bring the food and drinks and check up on us occasionally. Total time about 5 minutes at our table. Tracking the food order and bringing it to our table is maybe 10 minutes for a total time effort of 15 minutes work. The tip I leave equates to $60.00 per hour. I won't grudge someone a good living but this seems excessive. Would someone in the industry please explain how it actually breaks out.
