My mom was a teacher for 34 years. I speak, read and write English ‘fluently.’ But for the life of me, I cannot figure out why white folks use the word ‘awesome’ so much. Any time they’re talking about something good, they use the word ‘awesome’ to describe it! What is this about? When a person ‘constantly’ uses the same phrase or cliche over and over and over again, it means they’re NOT that smart. Widen your vocabulary and learn some different words. But this one has always puzzled me.

I’m from the generation where it was one of the “cool” words. I think it’s just force of habit. I personally never use it, but then I wasn’t one of the cool kids either. I’ve also heard it used more ironically lately, so it seems to mean the opposite now, kind of like saying, “Oh, great” when something annoying happens. I think slang is like fashion; it keeps changing, but many of us hold on to things from when we were growing up.
