I am a vegetarian. When I share this with meat eaters, I am often ridiculed or criticized. Why? I don’t stand on a soapbox trying to convert folks, nor do I criticize others for their dietary habits.

I know exactly what you mean and have had very similar experiences. On asking the question, I have been told many times that it is assumed that I will automatically try to ‘convert’ people to my way of life, or condemn people who choose to eat meat. They feel they have to state their reasons for eating meat so they are not perceived as being cruel.
