In other countries such as Israel or Russia, is shopping on the web as popular as it is in the United States?

No not really. I think the major reason is that creadit cards are not as wide spread so it is harder to shop online.

While in Kuwait, I kept in touch with the internet by frequenting an internet cafe. Internet cafes are very popular overseas, since many people in developing countries don’t own computers, and only the wealthy or upper middle class have internationally recognized credit cards. Since there are so many expatriates in the middle-east, I saw Indians, Filipinos, Pakistanis, some Europeans and arabs from various countries as they surfed the net. Most of the activity I saw from foreigners involved IM’s, chat rooms, looking at music and news sites, and using long-distance internet phone service. I don’t think shopping is at the top of their lists. Just my personal observation.

Yes. If they have money and the items for sale are described in the correct language.

Hi Jennifer, I lived in Israel for two years. The ‘net is extremely popular in Israel but not for shopping. It’s extremely expensive with the shekel (Israeli currency) to buy things especially in US funds and customs charges a lot of duty on items brought in. I ordered some books from amazon.com and ended up paying duty that was almost the same as the cost of the books!

It sure is in Europe. Germany has Ebay-Madness. You can get nearly the same exact things from ebay.de as from ebay.com. They don’t do groceries, but I’ve always thought that was overboard.

Hmm, my guess is that this depends pretty much on the person in question, it depends on what you’re interested in (shopping, gaming, chatting etc.). Shopping on the net definitely requires a reliable and working postal/distribution network and decent roads/railroads and such to function… So, in countries lacking this kind of necessities, net shopping would be difficult (if not totally impossible). Also, countries lacking these would probably lack decent and reliable internet connections, too. It also depends where you happen to live – in a big city with all those department stores, malls and so on relatively nearby, or in the countryside, far away from all this. In the latter case, net shopping could be a good source to get some of the stuff you want. I use the net to get information and stuff that would otherwise be difficult to obtain offline (rare and/or foreign books, DVD’s, CD’s, mostly). I don’t buy my clothes or shoes online, although that would be totally possible – I like to actually fit the clothes on before buying 🙂 In Finland, a hefty slice (or possibly even the majority) of home-buying and car-shopping happens these days online. Online auctions seem to be a big hit in Finland, too. So, it would be either rare/foreign small-ish items, or big stuff like cars and houses changing ownership on the net… I hope this helps 🙂

Internet shopping is very popular here in New Zealand. We have one of the hoighest rates of Internet usage in the world and many people shop on overseas sites and local ones. One very popular local site is Trademe.co.nz, a local equivalent of ebay. It has 1 million members (that’s one in every 4 New Zealanders)!

My husband says that the 2nd most popular country for using the internet is China, in internet cafes. Here in England we use the internet alot. I personally have my groceries delivered to my house after ordering them on the store’s website, which is very handy and saves alot of time and effort. Plus we order books and music occasionally from amazon.co.uk, or use the UK version of ebay.
