JoshMemberAre Sikh men required to wear turbans (I don’t know the proper name for them) as part of their religion, or are they just decorative? As I understand it, Sikh men don’t cut their hair.

Ann23807MemberIt’s my understanding that turbans are worn since they do not cut their hair as the long uncut hair signifies strengh, similar to the beliefs of some Native American men.

SandyMembersikhs are not supposed to but their hair because your strength is supposed to be in your hair, a bit like David and Goliath. In India it is better to keep your hair in a turban because of the heat etc and that is why sikh men wear turbans and the other reason being the turban signifies that you belong to the sikh religion

The reason for the turban is to protect the hair. Men and/or women are required to keep their hear covered at all times. They are both permitted to wear turbans, however it is compulsory for a man to wear a turban who is baptised. I emphasis baptised as Sikhs are not considered Sikhs by birth, they have to initiated. Like a child born into a doctors family is not automatically a doctor. Not baptised Sikhs cut their on their head and on there face, but many still wear turbans, this is purely a cultural thing and is a general practise in Punjab, North West India. This practise, of wearing of turbans for non-baptised sikhs, has changed in the west as more and more sikhs are cutting their hair. This is a short version of much deeper significance of the turban and hair for Sikhs.

Singh28018MemberYes, all Sikh men are required to wear a turban. Young children often wear something a little different called a ‘patka’. ‘Turban. A symbol of royalty and dignity. Historically the turban has been held in high esteem in eastern and middle eastern cultures. Guru Gobind Singh transformed this cultural symbol into a religious requirement so that the Khalsa would always have high self-esteem. It differentiates Sikhs from other religious followers who keep long hair but wear caps or keep matted hair. The turban cannot be covered by any other head gear or replaced by a cap or hat. The turban is mandatory for Sikh men and optional for Sikh women. ‘ -http://www.sikhs.org/khalsa.htm

AVi23421MemberYes ! Sikh men have to wear a turban as its sign of their faith.Like christians wearing a cross. If a sikh man cuts his hair he is ostracized from the sect. The founder of Sikhism,Guru Gobind Singh, laid down 5 articles which a man should have to be considered a sikh.Kesh(hair),Kirpan(a small blunt knife),Kacha(kind of shorts/briefs,)kangha(hair comb),Kada(a metal bracelet).Since all these are not possible to carry with the restrictions and lifestyles these days all the more importance is given to hair.
