Where did the term ‘tricky tray’ or ‘Chinese auction’ originate? Why is it called this?

I suspect this is a worf game, but that’s all I know. Insultingly, ‘Chinese’ was/is used to describe disorder. The term I know is ‘Chinese fire drill.’ This signifies bunch of people running all about in great confusion. Chinse auction might be in this category: A wild disorganized activity, maybe even an auction. When and who? I have no idea. But it is at least 50 years old. L Freeman
