I am travelling to Europe in the next year or so. I will be in Spain, Portugal and Morocco for one trip, and possibly Italy for the second; both are guided tours. Outside of the normal, ‘big city’ issues and dangers (pickpockets, street people, being overcharged if you don’t know rates, etc, tourist traps), I really need to know as a Black female, what I need to be worried about about and cautious. I’ve heard several contrasting stories – they assume Black women are dancers, singers or worse. Especially post 9/11, people hate Americans, but may cut me slack because I’m black. Or not know if I am African, South American, etc. they may be mean because of anti-immigrant efforts. What are local anti-black words? Yes, I want to know if a person is calling me a nigger in their local language. I’ll at least know to leave and not spend my money. I’m from Philly so I know the eggplant references. Since I will be over there for two weeks at a time, any suggestions on hairstyles and/or clothing to avoid. I was planning conservative microbraids, dark brown hair color. Because of my shape, I refuse to wear low cut, micros, or tight fitting close – I don’t dare do that in the states. Any help would be appreciated. Any links to Black American sites, resturants, etc. in Europe would also be appreciated.
