Now please don’t yell at me, because I am trying damned hard to understand: but as a feminist, the whole sex re-assignment surgery thing is very disturbing. It seems to me that, rather than empowering those who don’t fit into traditional expectations about gender and sex, it simply hands all power to the medical profession, and keeps gender oppression where it is. ‘Oh, you’re a confident assertive woman who wants to take the sexual lead? Well that must make you a MAN. And you’re a man with a sensitive yet flirtatious spirit? That means you’re a WOMAN — so we’ll make you into one.’ As for the argument that what FTMs really want is a penis, and what MTFs really want are breasts and a vagina, well: I’ve been told that the surgeon’s creations are numb-feeling and barely functional. No match for a good strap-on (or falsies) either. Anyway, what happens if you apply all the same reasoning to those who feel they have been unfairly trapped in the wrong race? Are we supposed to treat Michael Jackson’s plastic surgery as a good thing?
