Michele-PParticipantTo people of different demographic backgrounds: It seems that each decade has been marked by a theme. The 1960s was the ‘hippies,’ the 1970s was ‘disco,’ but what was the theme of the 1980s, and with the 1990s almost over, is there a theme for this decade?

Patrick-Wood19914ParticipantThe ’80’s were marked characteristically by materialism and narcissism. Although narcississm could have arguably been just as prominent during the 60’s and 70’s. What really distinguishes the ’80’s is in fact materialism. Unlike in the ’60s and ’70s when socialism was on the rise, people during the ’80s found themselves buying into real-estate and the new technology. The ’80’s and possible early 90’s could be called the decade of decadence. The ’90s, at least the mid to late 90’s, can be considered characterized by the rapid exchange of information and technology. While progress has been, arguably, stunted by certain predominant economic forces such as Microsoft and various pharmaseutical companies, the change that has occured in the last ten years cannot be understated.
