Where did the term ‘jap’ (Jewish American Princess) originate, and what traits or habits of Jewish women brought about this stereotype?

My friend told me that the term ‘jap’ can be insulting, but he says they’re basically vain people who care little about personal accomplishments. Their goals are usually to get married to a rich person as soon as possible then raise kids and spend their husband’s money. Susposedly, they come from boatie familes, or rather, immigrants, people just off the boat. That is what I understand from what my friend told me.

The term JAP is believed to have originated around the 1880’s with the great third wave of Jewish immigrants in the US. It was originally used within the Jewish community as another phrase for, ‘daddy’s little girl.’ However, Jewish American author Philip Roth introduced a new stereotype to the world whith his 1958 novel ‘Goodbye, Columbus.’ This image painted the JAP as a, ‘manicured, materialistic, frigid, parasitic woman.’ The book won praise from many young American litterature fans of all religions at the time. But it was not viewed highly by Roth’s Jewish Elders. Anti-Semitism and WWII still haunted these people very much at the time. The stereotype has been further reinforced through many different forms of American media. And has become a staple phrase used by WASP males at Universities and colleges across the nation (as well as the work force). It is my firm belief that it is used as a justification for the WASP males fear of powerful women of a different ethnic and religious background.
