I got into an online discussion over a supposed historical document called the Willie Lynch letter. For those of you not familiar with it, it claims to be a speech by a West Indian slaveholder telling ‘how to break a negro’ by dividing blacks against each other. It was obvious to me that the letter was written in the twentieth century by its very modern language, not in 1712 like claimed. How common is it for this letter to be passed off as genuine in the black community or in colleges around the country? I would especially like to hear from professors and students as to how this letter is dealt with in their classes.
