I was born and raised in Central Florida, and I was wondering what people from the rest of the country think of Florida and Floridians. Do you really think it’s just a bunch of old people?

No, I don’t think you are all old, nor stupid, nor Republican. I believe you are a state that reflects a basic change in the country. A Southern state that has outlived its Southern roots. More minorities, more liberal-minded people and more 21st century Americans than your governor would like to believe.

Myers — but left over 20 (we won’t say how far over) years ago. I was rather unique for that time — a native born ‘cracker’. But, my parents were both from New York. Many Floridans, especially those from the south part, are NOT the stereotypical southern, because they have very northern roots. I agree with one responder, there is a very strong Latin culture there. I would also say that there is also a very influential elderly population. I just left because too many people of all kinds have made the kind of Florida I grew up in unavailable unless you are very, very rich. It’s all one big city all along the coast lines (of course Central is different — I hope!).

Now I know lots of other people live there, but you have to admit, Florida is an EXTREMELY popular retirement home.

There are 16 million people in this state, but nearly 12 million live south of Naples. This changing attitude you speak of is brought by people from Latin America and retirees from every corner of the country and Canada. Funny how liberals always seem to believe conservative-minded people are stuck in the past and that Southerners are slow-witted. There is still plenty of Southern roots in Florida, you just have to get above the mouse house. By the way, do you have a mandatory age for evicting people from your city, because all of the New Yorkers I meet seem to think it’s the greatest place on earth, so I can only conclude that they were forced out. Please don’t think I’m one of those “welcome to Florida, now get the hell out” people; I would just like people to know that there are people in Florida born here who have all their teeth and can form complete sentences. My family homesteaded our land when Chester A. Arthur was president, so we’ve been here awhile. Just as a last jab, everyone who came here and recounted the vote said President Bush won, including The New York Times.

But, when Jeb won re-election I had to think that Floridians validated his behavior.

But other then that, the only thing I can see wrong with Florida is the stinking governor you have down there. I think the whole state has to many republicans in positions of power in the government. Of course, that’s just like the whole Federal Government. Way to lopsided in power. No balance. Other then that it is a decent place to live for older people who don’t want to have to put up with driving and walking in snow and very cold weather. And Florida has no inheritance tax. Which is a very good thing for a lot of older people who don’t want to give the Federal Government any more money then they already have.

I and others with brains are more apt to blame the system. Voting should be made as simple as possible, for everyone, not just ‘old’ people. But the current system is what got the incumbents into office, and, by definition, the only ones who can change it are incumbents. I’m not holding my breath.

I travel a lot and the reaction I typically get when I tell people I am from Florida is something like this: Oh, wow! You must go to Disney/the beach all the time! It amazes me. Hello! We have to work for a living just like everyone else. We’re not on a permanent vacation down here. If anything the tourists make our lives more difficult. But that’s another post!
