I am a Prevention Specialist and I work mainly with African Americans, and the clients I serve are mostly African Americans also. It has come to my attention that most of my clients refer to each other as ‘Nigga’ which comes from ‘Nigger’. If the ‘N’ word is something so denigrating for blacks, just like ‘spic’ is for me (Hispanic) why is it that they call each other that?

“Nigga” did derive from the word “nigger” but it was made into something positive from an African-american rapper named Tupac Shakur. He turned a word so negative and demeaning into something positiive. “Nigga” means never ignorant getting goals accomplished. And I’m sure when it is said they are not saying it with the “er” Also today when I hear people say “nigga” They are referring to men as a gender, especially when women say it and not men as a color. Its an understanding that we have within the race…I just would like to tell you and the rest who seem to be so curious on why we still use it that you will never understand…curiousity killed the cat….just don’t you ever say it.
