I had many opportunities to interact with and observe black men my age when I was in the Army. The question that still bugs me from those days: If two black guys were arguing, they could insult and threaten each other for hours without anybody getting too excited. But if one of them ever uttered ‘f— you,’ everyone observing the altercation would suddenly become agitated and uncomfortable, and fisticuffs would soon follow. Why was that particular insult the trigger for violence?
