I was stationed in Germany for five years. I would have to say the most popular sport is what we Americans call soccer.

My German friend, Heiko, has just definitely declared that Fussball (soccer) is the most popular sport. My other German friends would say the same thing. Heiko gets up in the middle of the night or early in the morning to watch play-off games. Of course he has to drink beer while watching regardless of the hour of the day… Oh yeah – he prefers American beers!!!

Ok, not entirely true. The national sport is soccer (Fussball) and it’s wildly popular. The Germans also enjoy Formula 1 racing, Cycling (ala Tour de France), and for the last few years have been experimenting with American Football, which they call football. The Frankfurt Galaxy is one of the top teams. As far as televised goes, Fussball and Formula 1 are the mainstays with Football mostly on pay-per-view .

I’m not 100% sure of what the most popular sport but I know that my cousin, who lives in Germany, loves soccer and tells me that it is pretty popular in Germany.

i’m assuming it’s soccer (or football, as they call it). my uncle worked at a NATO base in northern germany when i was younger so i spent a summer out there, hanging out with the local kids. after about 2 hours of trying to teach them the rules of baseball, my cousin and i gave up and played soccer with them.

Without a doubt, the most popular sport in Germany, Europe, and many other countries is soccer.

I lived there for a few years and far and away soccer is king. I didn’t get the impression that there’s even second and third tier sports, like we have with basketball and baseball coming in behind football. Incidentally, the Germans are far more involved with sports we find obscure. There are big table tennis and badmitton (sp?) movements over there.

There is no doubt about that: soccer is by far the most popular sport in Germany. Unless major international sport events are taking place (Olympic Games, Formula 1 races etc.), approximately 70-90% of the daily sports news deal with soccer. When it comes to amateur sports (college, spare time) soccer is still dominant, but athletic sports, basketball, handball, tennis, swimming, cycling etc. are very popular as well.
