I would like to know what different people of different backgrounds get out of sports. So many people make it the center of their lives. Why?

I enjoy sports because they get the adrenaline going, and it’s a good way to get exercise and have some friendly competition. I don’t make sports the center of my life, but the people who do are just taking it a little farther. At least it keeps them out of trouble.

Interesting question, Sonia, one more people should ask. On the positive side, different cultures revere those who have succeeded and championed on the playing field. We love the combat, whether physical or mental, of seeing contestants in a game best their competition in a well-played game. On the negative side, once most atheletes leave school and turn professional, in my opinion, they turn into overpaid crybabies. I get tired of hearing overpaid professional atheletes complain about how tough their lives are or how they can’t get by on several million dollars a year and need more. In the early 80’s, there was a basketball player in San Antonio, Texas named George ‘The Iceman’ Gervin. George, at that time, was earning around $360,000/year and complained that it was just too hard to live on that kind of money. At that time, I was living reasonably well on less than 1/10th of that. Well a radio station in Dallas, Texas took up a collection for George as a joke. After 1 month, they collected $0.63 which they sent to him. Sports just ain’t all that.

Most sports are competition oriented, which is what keeps people watching and doing them. Sports are a battle of strength, endurance, wits, etc. that lend themselves to spectacle. Why do people get so hyped about the Super Bowl? Partially because it saturates the media for the week preceding it, but also because the audience is hoping to see two teams who are at the top of their sport perform to the best of their ability.

As for why some people make it the center of their lives, I think many of those people wish they had the talent to make it at the professional level, and they can live out their dream through the athelete or team they follow. Plus some people just love some sports. I like basketball. It doesn’t rule my life or anything, but as long as a good game is on, I’ll watch it regardless of which teams are playing. I’m not a sports nut, though, so I can’t really give you the fanatic’s perspective.
