I have known some great athletes, and they were great people. However, I grew to hate sports. There was screaming at each other on the field for a dropped ball, and the parents were worse. In college, football players tore the drinking fountains out of the wall, and wrestlers put their fist through the window every Friday night after getting drunk. We were taught, ‘It’s not whether you win or lose…’, but it WAS. It was really, really, really important, even though it didn’t matter the next day. Last weekend, 30 fans were arrested rioting in celebration of their basketball team winning. I was waiting for a bus, and watched as people dragged dumpsters into the road, and knocked over whatever wasn’t bolted down. I was always told that ‘sports build character.’ I haven’t seen any character built that wasn’t there in the beginning, and when I ask, someone says, ‘Oh, you must have been the wuss that got picked last,’ a perfect visual aid for my speech. Can anyone explain what character sports builds, honestly? I don’t see it.
