Growing up I often got made fun of in school for having a southern accent. This always seemed odd to me considering that that is where I lived, in the south. I was born and raised in North Carolina but fellow students often asked me where I was from or if I was from Texas. Needless to say, this was puzzling. Even to this day I get comments from friends who are even from smaller cities (associated with stronger accents)or from even further south about my accent. Are other southerners just covering up their accents to avoid stereotypes?
