Laura-A22965MemberThere were some people on my school team who were drinking, and people tried to turn them in, but they lied about doing it. I am the captain of the team, yet I feel so helpless and that I have no influence over them. What should I do?

SR28459MemberI’d say that as captain of the team, part of your responsibilities include helping to ensure the welfare of each player. Why not try talking to the kids who have been drinking and gently voice your concern rather than turn them into the authorities? As captain, you probably have more influence over them than adults do. And as a sidenote, I’ll add this: teenagers experiment. Drinking may not be healthy, but as long as the kids are drinking responsibly (not driving drunk, damaging property, stealing alcohol, etc.) I wouldn’t be too concerned. Unless these kids are showing up to games drunk, I’d leave their personal lives alone.

Rick29829MemberI’m not sure what this has to do with diversity, but I would say don’t turn them in. Just let it go.

Sarah28147MemberYou haven’t mentioned how old you are, but I imagine the main issue you have with this is that they’re underage. Let it go! Different societies have different age limits, it’s entirely a cultural thing. This may sound a bit cavalier, but they’ve shown they’ve the nous not to get into trouble for it, so as long as they’re not going to get chucked out of (your) team it’s no bother. Only thing you might want to get concerned about is if it’s a safety issue – you haven’t mentioned what sport it is, but alcohol seriously dehydrates, so if someone consumes too much too soon before a game there a risk of injury and dehydration. So if you want to do anything, just have a quiet word with the players and warn them. As an example, I row, and my two most painful races were one with a broken wrist, and one where I was hungover. And I’m not joking when I say the latter was easily the worst!!

Nicodemus SmithMemberDecide what you believe in. If you recognize the fact that underage drinking and getting drunk are both wrong, AND you want to stand for what’s right, say something about it to them. Bear in mind that they may not like you anymore afterwards and some probably won’t be your friends, but such is the price of righteousness. Yes I am being serious.
