EOE and bilingualism are 2 different issues. Being and Equal Opportunity Employer simply means that the employer will not discriminate against applicants on the basis of race, ethnicity, gender, and so on. Basically an applicant will be judged soley on his or her ability to do the job. Being able to speak more than 1 language is a skill like typing or bookkeeping – it has nothing to do with a person’s race, ethnicity, etc. If a business caters to a large spanish-speaking population, then they may need their employees to speak spanish and english. That is just part of the job. If you are a person who doesn’t speak spanish, then you should probably look for a job where you wont be working directly with people whose primary language is spanish. Or if those are the jobs you really want to do, then you can learn spanish. It’s just like learning any other skill required to do a certain job. Right now I am learning Japanese because working with the Japanese engineers is part of my job. I look at it as an opportunity to learn something new.

Although this country’s native language is English, there are many other races living in the United States. Imagine that you are forced to move to another country. How would you feel if when you called the telephone company, you couldn’t be assisted because there were no English speaking representatives. Or suppose you couldn’t set up an appointment for electricity to be turned on in your new home. Are you supposed to live in the dark because you can’t speak English? How would you expect to get through day to day living? At this point, you are probably thinking that they should SIMPLY learn to speak English. Well, that takes time, and you can’t expect someone who can’t speak English to simply not speak to anyone until they learn.

In job hunting, most workplaces state they are an Equal Opportunity Employer. Why is it, then, that for an average job paying minimum wage, one of the requirements is that the person be bilingual? This makes no sense to me living in a country in which your primary language is English.

I get pretty disgusted by some people falsely assuming ‘English is the language of America’ all the time. How blind can you be? Never heard of native languages, apparently. There are hundreds of thousands of Navajo and Cherokee speakers, for example. Never heard of the fact that there are huge areas of the country that for centuries were and still are filled with speakers of languages besides English, like Louisiana (Acadian) northern Maine (French), Hawaii (Hawaiian, Filipino, Japanese, etc.) and the whole Southwest (Spanish). So knowing how to communicate with your customers in the way that is most comfortable to them is a valuable and marketable skill. I’d think that would be obvious, but many people in the United States have not learned that yet, like much of Europe, Asia and Latin America already have. By the way, I’ve never heard of any minimum wage work that requires you to be bilingual. Whoever heard of McDonald’s employees being bilingual, for example? Being bilingual is such a marketable skill it pays far better than minimum.

how can u say that we live in a country where Eenglish is the primary language? there are millions of peole in this country that don’t speak English. what if you applied for a job at a welfare office and you didn’t know a lick of spanish? are you going to be alble to talk to all the mexicans who go in there? no, probly not! How would you like it if you went to a fast food restaurant and the only language they spoke was spanish or chinese? you wouldn’t huh? In some jobs being bilingual is a requirement and if you don’t like it then don’t apply for the job!

You must understand that even though we have different languages here in the U.S., MOST of the time we didn’t hear them until latinos came in and wanted to change everything! Why is it that other cultures can come here and acutally learn the english language and still speak their own, but latinos want to come into THIS country and say we’re wrong for having this way? In other words, if the americans went into the spanish speaking countries, would you want them to a. take over and change everything you’ve once know and b. tell you you’re language is wrong and kick you to the curb?

Don’t confuse EOE with job requirements. After all, if I was deaf, I wouldn’t be a very effective music producer. Or if I was color-blind, I couldn’t do a very good job working at a factory assembling circuit boards with colored wires. Simple fact of life and common sense, really. Equal Opportunity means that each person with the required skills for the job get a fair chance regardless of RACE, COLOR, CREED, AGE, or RELIGIOUS BELIEFS. ‘Number of Languages Spoken’ or ‘Hair Color’ are not protected under EOE; therefore, an employer CAN base hiring decisions on them. The language requirement also depends on the geographic area in which you live, or the specific job in question.
